There’s an amusing Śaiva folk tale of a Vaiṣṇava devotee who, while praying to Viṣṇu at a Harihara temple, painstakingly blindfolded the Śiva statue: only to have Śiva manifest, for that was whom he had on his mind the whole time.

“Decolonization” reminds me of this.
